Coney Island Boardwalk

One hundred years ago today … The Coney Island Boardwalk opened between West 5th and 17th Streets. The photos below shows Edward J. Riegelmann, Brooklyn Borough President, (front row, third from left with rope in hands) presiding over the ceremony.)

Riegelmann had driven in the first stake of the Coney Island boardwalk on October 1, 1921. (Click here to read our report on that).

We also featured Coney Island in features on its 1920s gay bath culture (click here), how it fared in a particularly nasty 1920 storm (click here), and some tragic 1920 drownings.
