establishing Julliard

One hundred years ago today … The Julliard Foundation was being formed, setting in motion the 1924 creation of the Julliard School.

The Foundation was built out of its predecessor organization, the Institute of Musical Art, which in 1920 was based at 120 Claremont Street in Morningside Heights. The site had once housed the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum, and now houses Columbia University’s Manhattan School of Music–which, coincidentally, was chartered by the Board of Regents in 1920 as the Neighborhood Music School.

The Julliard Foundation’s first director was the Brooklyn-born Eugene Allen Noble.
