Bronx Librarians quit over salary

One hundred years ago today … At a Saturday night meeting hosted by the Bronx City Council, librarians for the borough’s branches of the New York Public Library quit over a salary dispute. The maximum salary for an NYPL librarian, in 1920, was, oddly enough, $1,920. That translates to $28,654 in 2020 dollars.

The meeting was held at Morris High School, off east 166th Street in Morrisania area of the Bronx. The school was founded in 1896 as one of the original public high schools in New York City.
