Christmas Part I: Santa Claus, Children, and Charity

One hundred years ago today … Excitement about Christmas mounted. The Daily News announced that veterans would be treated to holiday dinners. The paper’s photographers, meanwhile, snapped photographs of Santas distributing gifts to “little unfortunates” at Greenwich House and “Oriental youngsters” of the Chinese Sunday School in the Church of All Nations.

The Girl Scouts and Immigration Commissioner Wallis (on Ellis Island) also gave holiday charity to children.
